In the mid-90s, I spent a summer backpacking across Europe, and I remember being in Ireland, leaving a pub in the wee hours of the morning. Classical music was being played in the streets, in an attempt to ease alcohol-induced moods and help prevent fights.
Years later, when I volunteered for a dog rescue and was part of the transportation team taking dogs to and from an adoption event, we would load each dog into their own crate and place them in the back of a large van. Although we were helping them, it was very stressful for them and there was a lot of barking and crying. We'd put on classical music, and within just a few minutes, they would all settle down and we could drive in peace.
Music and sound has the power to transform environments, both inner and outer.
Today's sound healing that you find in yoga studios and meditation centers may consist of gongs, crystal bowls, tibetan bowls, drums, harps, chimes, flutes, voice, and more. While it may seem as if these offerings are 'new age' and modern, they are not. Sound instruments can be found in all ancient cultures across the globe, and have been used throughout history to celebrate, to heal, to connect with the animal world and to communicate with the human one.
Everything is energy, and all energy holds a vibrational frequency. We can use the instruments of sound healing in order to create frequencies where the body is able to relax, transform, and heal.
Crystal bowls are tuned to the Chakra system of the body, and can awaken dormant energies or help realign energies that are out of balance. Drums are reminiscent of a heartbeat. Gongs can create a deep vibrational resonance in the body while the mind surrenders to the sound. Chimes can often help us remember, feel, and connect to our inner child.
Silence is also a sound, and often a sound session will have interplay between sound and silence. Unstruck Sound (anahata nada) is the sound that comes before all sounds, and is considered the beginning of creation, the birth of the universe.
Dr. Mitchell Gaynor
Tuned to the chakra system of the body, crystal bowls offer a beautiful sound healing experience that can connect to angelic realms.
24" Dream Chau gong, played gently, deeply resonates in the tissues of the body without being overpowering. Relaxation naturally happens.
Four chimes representing earth, air, fire and water join together to create a lighthearted, sparkling energy.
An ocean drum transports you to the edges of the sea, as it mimics the sound of waves landing onshore.
Flow chimes are similar to a hand-held xylophone. Their light energy will lead you into a gentle experience of sound.
